Coldsores -
Coldsore Remedies
by Denny Bodoh
Coldsores are virus created sores, most commonly appearing on the face. The
virus that creates your coldsore is the herpes simplex virus - either the
type 1 or type 2. Other types of the herpes simplex virus are responsible
for causing such illnesses as chicken pox and mono.
Embarrassing coldsores
The herpes virus that causes these embarrassing coldsores is extremely
contagious and infects about 9 out of 10 people worldwide. It is a true
global epidemic. Historical records show that this was true even 2000 years
ago in ancient Rome. The Romans had such a problem with coldsore infections,
they did away with kissing in public ceremonies.
Embarrassing coldsores normally appears on the edge of the lip or near the
nose. It is passed on to others primarily by kissing. Quite likely that is
how you caught it too. The herpes virus will usually establish a lifetime
home in the nerve fibers nearest the point of first infection. This virus
will then create a sore in about the same place every time. If you have
embarrassing coldsores that show up in different spots around your mouth,
each one is from a different infection. Most often, during one coldsore
outbreak, we spread the virus to new locations by accident.
Antibiotics for coldsore treatment?
Coldsores are not life threatening like other viral infections, such as bird
flu. And like other virus related diseases, there are no antibiotics for
coldsore treatment. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses. The
damage created by the coldsore virus only affects the surface of the skin.
It is fortunate that this type of herpes virus does not spread internally
like the herpes that causes chickenpox.
It is the replication process of the herpes simplex virus that causes the
actual sore. This virus cannot reproduce itself. It enters a nerve cell near
the surface of the skin. It then forces the cell to create virus clones.
Once the cell is full, the virus destroys it to release all the new virus.
This destruction of millions of cells close together creates the visible
coldsore - a weeping open ulcer.
What is the best way to get rid of a coldsore?
On average, a coldsore a last about 3 to 4 weeks, before total healing. This
is a long time to be socially sidelined. They are quite painful and
often cause headaches, fever and swollen glands. There are
many hyped up coldsore remedies in the stores and on the internet. Most do
not work very well, or are considered comfort remedies, not healing
remedies. What is the best way to get rid of a coldsore? A
couple household items that cure coldsores are ice and teabags. Applying
ice, or some cold object, discourages the herpes virus from replicating.
Often it can drive the virus back into hibernation. The natural chemicals
found in tea not only fight virus but help heal the wound. Both are a bit
messy and inconvenient in public.

The scenario is all
too familiar: You feel a tingling on your lip and a small, hard spot that
you can't yet see. Sure enough, in a day or two, red blisters appear on your
lip. It's another cold sore, probably happening at a bad time, and there's
no way to hide it or make it go away quickly.
Cold sores — also called fever blisters — are quite different from canker
sores...
